Best Villas in Santorini + Where to stay

The island of Santorini now has many options when it comes to villa holidays from small 1 bedroomed suites for romantic getaways to large luxury properties that can offer anything up to 6 or 7 bedrooms. Many of the houses feature beautiful locations an high-end facilities including private swimming pools, jacuzzi tubs and many offer the amazing open views of the famous Santorini Caldera.

When choosing a vila on Santorini it is very important that you choose the right location for your group, many properties overlooking the caldera can often have many steps to negotiate, not only down but up also. It may seem a great idea to wake up each morning with those wonderful caldera views but the novelty of the climb to the top of the cliff each day may soon wear thin.

However caldera views are something special that Santorini has to offer, so if you’re wanting that special view without steps then maybe consider a villa in the area of Akrotiri, most of the properties in this area are new and as its only had recent development still many are without lots of steps.

A good idea for family villa holidays in Santorini could be something closer to the coast, maybe the area of Kamari or the seaside resorts of Perissa and Perivolos, not only do you have nice black sand beaches but safe swimming with good local facilities including many restaurants/tavernas, shops, mini markets and also some low key nightlife for any teenagers in the group.

So where is the best place to stay?

Fira, Firastefani and Imerovigli

The areas of Fira, Firostifani and Imerovigli have now pretty much all now joined together forming one long run of accommodations, shops, restaurants, cafes, pubs and some fairly good nightlife of which mainly gets going in the high summer months of July and August.

Oia and Finikia

Oia is more relaxed and less hectic, once the sun has set and the hoards disappeared the village returns to a stylish relaxed spot with some lovely places to enjoy a dinner or a few drinks as the evening fads. The small settlement of Finikia is just a short distance along from Oia, although the village and its accommodations do not offer caldera views most have lovely views to the Aegean sea looking east towards the island of Anafi. The village itself is very calm with a few shops and a small number of tavernas/restaurants.

Kamari

This was one of the first coastal areas to be developed, the resort features a long black beach with mainly safe bathing and very good beach facilities, lots of bars and restaurants backing the black sand beach with sun beds plus parasols. This is an out and out tourist hot spot, lots of tourist accommodations, huge choice of places to eat and drink plus a vast selection of tourist shops. The resort has grown over the years and is still getting bigger each season, from Kamari a regular bus service operates to the capital Fira and the airport is just 15 minutes away by taxi.

Perissa and Perivolos

Perissa was also one of the first areas of Santorini to be developed back in the early 80’s, at one time a huge campsite was at the heart of the resort, this has now gone and new accommodations are springing up each year. Perissa has a more laid-back feel than Kamari, not so built up but still offers a great choice of places to eat and drink, lots of shops plus a couple of good chill out beach lounge bars.

Perivolos is really an extension of Perissa, it’s just a bit further along the soft black sand beach and is at this time just starting to be developed. The area has a good selection of tavernas and also a couple of good daytime beach lounge bars with water sports also available.

Pyrgos / Megalochori / Messaria – Villages

The island has a number of nice villages away from the coast, Pyrgos and Megalochori are 2 villages with lots of good quality villas/houses for rent, most with private pools and great views. These villages offer a quiet charm with very good facilities including mini markets and various restaurants/tavernas.

Messaria is in the centre of the island with lots of local life and as it sits on a major crossroads always seems to have a bit going on, also very good local facilities as it has a large residential community.
